Developed Especially for River Chub
Gold Medal Special Chub Mix is a distinctive sweet groundbait developed for one of our most exciting river fish — the chub.
Chub are powerful, opportunistic feeders, and attracting them into your swim often requires careful bait presentation and an understanding of how food travels in the current.
This mixture combines a sweet attractant with active particles designed to break away from the groundbait and drift downstream.
The idea is to create a trail of attraction through the swim, encouraging fish to investigate the source.
Two Special Ingredients
Two distinctive components help set this mixture apart from conventional river groundbaits.
- Wasp grub honey: A sweet ingredient inspired by the long-standing reputation of wasp grubs as a chub bait.
- Active flakes: Lightweight particles designed to break away from the groundbait and travel downstream with the current.
As the groundbait begins to break down, these particles can spread through the swim, helping to create a visible and scented feeding trail.
This makes the mixture particularly interesting for anglers fishing flowing rivers.
Proven in My Own River Match Fishing
I’ve used this very mixture to catch some tremendous bags of chub during my competitive fishing career.
Among my successes while using Chub Mix have been victories in:
- The Lower Wye Championships
- The Wye Championship
- The Wye Charity Matches
Anyone who has fished the River Wye knows what a wonderful river it can be for chub fishing, but also how demanding it can be when you’re competing against experienced anglers.
Those results gave me considerable confidence in the mixture and its ability to form part of a successful river fishing approach.

Which Hook Baits Work Well?
Special Chub Mix can be used alongside several traditional river hook baits.
- Bread: A classic chub bait, particularly useful when fishing with breadcrumb-based feed.
- Maggots: A versatile choice for river fishing.
- Casters: Another effective option when targeting chub and other coarse fish.
Experiment with the hook bait and feeding rate according to the conditions and the way the fish respond.
How to Prepare Special Chub Mix
- Place the dry groundbait in a bowl: Start with the quantity you expect to use during your session.
- Add water gradually: Introduce small amounts while mixing thoroughly with the palm of your hand.
- Form firm balls: Aim for a consistency that allows the groundbait to bind together for accurate feeding.
- Introduce the groundbait: Throw or catapult suitable-sized balls into the swim, where permitted.
- Allow the current to work: As the groundbait breaks down, the active flakes can drift downstream and spread through the feeding area.
CHAMPION’S TIP: When river fishing for chub, think about where your groundbait will settle and where its particles will travel. Feeding in the right place can be more important than feeding a large quantity.
