A Taste of Continental Match Fishing
Gold Medal Continental Mix is a special sweet-and-sour groundbait inspired by the techniques and ingredients used by some of Europe’s leading match anglers.
The formula combines carefully selected continental spices, including turmeric, with the distinctive sweetness of molasses.
Each five-bag pack includes a sachet of rich molasses to incorporate during mixing.
The result is an aromatic groundbait suitable for experimenting with when targeting a variety of coarse fish, particularly on venues where several species may contribute to your catch.
Inspired by French Match Fishing Secrets
During my international match fishing career, I had the opportunity to fish alongside some outstanding European anglers.
While fishing in Nantes, France, I learned about some of the special groundbait recipes and ingredients being used by leading French competitors.
Their use of aromatic spices and sweet additives fascinated me, particularly the inclusion of molasses.
I began experimenting with these ideas and eventually developed my own Continental Mix, combining those continental influences with my experience of British and international match fishing.
It became a mixture I could turn to when fishing for a variety of species.

My 1986 World Championship Success
One of my most memorable experiences with this mixture came during the 1986 World Angling Championships at Strasbourg.
Fishing the Rhine waterway, I used my Continental Mix to catch approximately 17 lb of skimmers on the opening day, winning my section and putting myself in a strong position in the championship.
That performance helped me on my way to winning the individual silver medal at the 1986 World Championships.
For me, Continental Mix will always bring back memories of that remarkable competition and the lessons I learned from some of Europe’s finest anglers.

How to Prepare Continental Mix
- Start with the molasses: Empty the supplied molasses sachet into your mixing bowl.
- Add a little water: Stir thoroughly to dilute the molasses and distribute it evenly.
- Introduce the groundbait: Gradually add Continental Mix, stirring as the dry ingredients absorb the liquid.
- Adjust the moisture: Add small quantities of water as required to achieve the consistency needed for your fishing method.
- Riddle the mixture: Pass the prepared groundbait through a riddle into a separate bowl to remove lumps and produce a light, even texture.
- Form groundbait balls: Adjust the firmness according to the depth, current and feeding conditions.
CHAMPION’S TIP: Mix the molasses with water before adding the dry groundbait. This helps distribute the sweet additive more evenly throughout the mixture rather than leaving concentrated patches.

This versatile groundbait is worth trying on a range of freshwater venues.
- Rivers: Particularly when targeting skimmers, bream and other mixed coarse fish.
- Canals: When a varied catch of roach, skimmers and other species is possible.
- Stillwaters: As an aromatic alternative to conventional groundbait mixtures.
- Match fishing: When you need a flexible feeding approach for mixed-species venues.
It can also be blended with other Gold Medal groundbaits when you want to introduce a different aromatic character to your usual mixture.
