A Classic Groundbait for Roach Fishing

Some groundbait ingredients have stood the test of time, and few are more closely associated with traditional roach fishing than aniseed, hemp and roasted brown crumb.

Gold Medal Roach Mix combines these familiar ingredients in a specialist groundbait developed primarily for roach, while also being suitable for dace, carp and other coarse fish.

It’s a mixture that can be used on rivers, canals and stillwaters, with the moisture content adjusted to suit the fishing conditions.

For anglers who appreciate traditional groundbait methods, this is a particularly interesting blend.

When Aniseed Was Almost Too Good!

By Clive Branson — Former World Angling Champion

I’ve been using aniseed in groundbait since my childhood, and it’s an ingredient I’ve always associated with successful roach fishing.

Years ago, aniseed had such a reputation among match anglers that there was even talk of trying to ban its use in competitions!

It was believed to be so attractive to roach that anglers sometimes complained about fish moving out of their swims and into those of competitors using aniseed.

Whether the effect was quite as dramatic as some claimed is another matter, but there was certainly no shortage of confidence in its pulling power.

For me, the combination of aniseed, crushed hemp and roasted brown crumb brings back memories of the traditional groundbait methods I grew up with.

That’s why this mixture remains one of my personal favourites.

Why Choose Gold Medal Roach Mix?

  • Aniseed extract: Provides the distinctive aroma traditionally associated with roach groundbait.
  • Crushed hemp: Introduces hemp-based particles into the mixture.
  • Roasted brown crumb: Forms a traditional, natural-looking groundbait base.
  • Specialist roach formulation: Developed with roach fishing as its main purpose.
  • Other species: Also suitable for dace, carp and mixed coarse fish.
  • Versatile: Can be prepared for rivers, canals and stillwaters.

Roach Mix is also suitable for targeting dace and other river species.

Three Traditional Ingredients Working Together

Aniseed Extract

Aniseed has been used by generations of coarse anglers, particularly those targeting roach. Its distinctive aroma is one of the defining characteristics of this groundbait.

Crushed Hemp

Hemp has a long history in roach fishing. Crushed hemp provides additional seed particles within the mixture and complements the traditional breadcrumb base.

Natural Roasted Brown Crumb

Roasted brown crumb forms the foundation of the mixture, helping create a practical groundbait that can be prepared to suit different venues and methods.

Together, these ingredients produce a traditional groundbait with a distinctive aroma and varied particles.

Ideal for Rivers, Canals and Stillwaters

Gold Medal Roach Mix is suitable for several coarse-fishing situations:

  • Roach: The principal target species for this traditional formulation.
  • Dace: Worth considering when targeting shoals in flowing water.
  • Carp: Can be used as part of a general groundbait approach on suitable venues.
  • Mixed coarse fish: Useful where several species may respond to groundbait.

The ideal moisture content and feeding method will depend on the depth, current and feeding behaviour of the fish.

How to Prepare Gold Medal Roach Mix

  1. Place the dry mix in a bowl: Start with the quantity required for your fishing session.
  2. Add water gradually: Introduce small amounts while mixing thoroughly.
  3. Blend the mixture: Use the palm of your hand or a suitable mixing drill until the groundbait is evenly moistened.
  4. Check the consistency: Squeeze a small quantity to make sure it holds together sufficiently for your chosen method.
  5. Form small balls: Prepare portions suitable for accurate introduction into the swim.
  6. Adjust your feeding: Introduce further groundbait according to the response of the fish.

CHAMPION’S TIP: When targeting roach, avoid introducing more feed than the fish are likely to consume. Start with a manageable amount, observe the bites and build up the swim as feeding activity develops. On rivers, adjust the mixture to suit the current so your groundbait reaches the intended feeding area.

A Traditional Formula with Modern Versatility

Fishing methods and tackle have changed considerably over the years, but many of the basic principles of successful roach fishing remain the same.

Accurate feeding, sensible groundbait preparation and choosing ingredients suited to the fish are just as important today as they were decades ago.

Gold Medal Roach Mix brings together three familiar ingredients that have been part of British coarse fishing for generations.

A classic combination that still deserves a place in the angler’s bait bag.
