When You Need Groundbait That Stays Together Longer

Some fishing situations call for a groundbait that breaks down quickly, creating immediate attraction in the swim.

Others require a heavier mixture that reaches the bottom and releases its contents more gradually.

Gold Medal Stiff Turbo Mix was developed for those situations.

Made with a seed-based groundbait formulation, it can be mixed to a firm consistency to produce heavy balls that break down slowly in the water.

It’s particularly suited to deep stillwaters and can also be considered for moving water where additional weight and binding are useful.

Why Choose Stiff Turbo Mix?

  • Heavy formulation: Designed to produce firm groundbait balls suitable for deeper swims.
  • Slow breakdown: Releases groundbait and loose-feed particles gradually.
  • Seed-based ingredients: Provides a groundbait base that can be prepared to a stiff consistency.
  • Ideal for deep stillwaters: Developed with deeper venues in mind.
  • Useful in moving water: Can be prepared for situations where a firmer mix is required.
  • Suitable for incorporating loose feed: Can be combined with bloodworm, joker or other permitted feed particles.

Why I Developed Stiff Turbo Mix

By Clive Branson — Former World Angling Champion

One of the challenges when fishing deep stillwaters is controlling how quickly your groundbait breaks down once it reaches the bottom.

Sometimes you want an immediate release of particles to create attraction. At other times, a slower release can be useful, particularly when introducing feed such as bloodworm and joker.

I developed Stiff Turbo Mix to provide a heavier groundbait that could be mixed firmly and allowed to break down over a longer period.

It also offers the opportunity to use two different groundbait consistencies together, each serving a different purpose in the swim.

For me, this is one of the important principles of successful groundbaiting: choosing not only what to feed, but how and when that feed is released.

The Two-Mix Groundbaiting Technique

One interesting way of using Stiff Turbo Mix is alongside a softer groundbait mixture.

1. Softer Groundbait — Initial Release

A softer mixture can begin breaking down relatively quickly, helping to disperse particles and create an initial area of attraction.

2. Stiff Turbo Mix — Slower Release

Firm balls of Stiff Turbo Mix can take longer to break apart, releasing their contents more gradually.

This allows anglers to experiment with providing both an initial release of feed and a slower, continuing release in the same swim.

The aim is to establish an attractive feeding area while managing how quickly the available food is introduced.

Actual breakdown times will vary according to how firmly the balls are prepared, the water depth and the conditions.

Ideal for Controlled Release of Bloodworm and Joker

Bloodworm and joker have long been associated with specialist match-fishing groundbait techniques.

When permitted by the fishery or competition rules, these baits can be incorporated into a groundbait mixture and introduced to the swim.

A stiff, slow-breaking mixture gives anglers another way of controlling how those particles are released.

Rather than relying entirely on a rapidly breaking groundbait ball, Stiff Turbo Mix can be used to experiment with a more gradual breakdown.

It can also be used with other suitable loose-feed particles according to the species and conditions.

How to Prepare Stiff Turbo Mix

  1. Place the dry groundbait in a bowl: Start with the quantity required for your session.
  2. Add water gradually: Introduce small amounts while mixing thoroughly.
  3. Work towards a stiff consistency: Continue mixing until the groundbait can be squeezed firmly into a compact ball.
  4. Allow moisture to distribute: Check the mixture and adjust with a little more water if necessary.
  5. Add suitable loose feed: Incorporate bloodworm, joker or other permitted particles if required.
  6. Form firm groundbait balls: Compress the mixture sufficiently for the depth and conditions.
  7. Introduce accurately: Place the balls in the intended feeding area using a suitable method.

CHAMPION’S TIP: Try preparing two small test balls with slightly different moisture levels. Place them in shallow water where you can observe the breakdown. This can help you judge the consistency before introducing the main feed into a deep swim.

Where to Use Stiff Turbo Mix

  • Deep lakes: When a compact groundbait ball is needed to reach the bottom.
  • Deep stillwater match venues: Where controlling the breakdown of feed is important.
  • Moving water: Where a firmer groundbait can be useful, depending on the strength of the current.
  • Bloodworm and joker fishing: Where fishery and competition rules allow these baits.
  • Mixed-species fishing: When anglers want to experiment with a slower release of feed particles.
