Barbel are among our most powerful freshwater fish. They are well known for their strength, cautious feeding habits and attraction to rich, meaty and fish-based baits.

Gold Medal Special Barbel Mix has been developed specifically for these magnificent river fish.

Using a carefully selected combination of ingredients, the mix is designed to provide a strong food signal while blending naturally with the riverbed.

The Ingredients Behind the Mix

Special Barbel Mix combines:

Halibut fishmeal — a rich fish-based ingredient.
Blood ingredients — adding distinctive attraction.
Garlic — a strong, recognizable flavour.
Crushed hemp — adding natural particles and oils.
Maize — contributing food value and texture.
Bloodworm colouring — helping create a darker, natural-looking presentation.

The combination provides a rich, amino-acid-containing groundbait designed for river conditions.

Why I Developed This Groundbait

I originally created this mix after anglers asked me for a groundbait specifically formulated for barbel.

Drawing on my experience of fish behaviour, feeding patterns and the ingredients used in successful Continental groundbaits, I developed a blend intended to provide the attraction and texture needed for barbel fishing.

My aim was simple: a practical, effective groundbait that anglers could use confidently on rivers.

How to Use Special Barbel Mix

Choose your feeder: The mix is particularly suited to feeder fishing on rivers.
Add water gradually: Mix thoroughly until the groundbait reaches a firm, slightly sticky consistency.
Check the texture: The mix should remain in the feeder during casting but release its contents once on the riverbed.
Add extra attraction: Try combining it with pellets, casters, prepared hemp or maggots.
Adjust for the flow: Faster rivers generally require a firmer mix than slow-moving water.

CHAMPION’S TIP: Test a small amount of your prepared groundbait in the margins before fishing. Watch how quickly it breaks down and adjust the consistency if necessary.
