Gold Medal Bloodworm Mix is a specialist groundbait containing real dried bloodworm, an ingredient based on one of the most familiar natural food sources for many freshwater fish.
Bloodworm has long been valued by match anglers, particularly when targeting roach, bream, skimmers and other coarse fish.
By incorporating dried bloodworm into a prepared groundbait, this mix offers anglers a practical way to introduce bloodworm-derived attraction into their feeding area.
It can be used on its own or blended with other Gold Medal groundbaits to suit different fishing situations.
How My International Fishing Experience Inspired This Mix
During my international match fishing career in the early 1980s, I discovered just how effective bloodworm could be as a natural fishing bait.
I was among the early anglers on the British match fishing circuit to experiment with using neat bloodworm as groundbait, and the results were outstanding.
At the time, bloodworm was expensive and not always easy to obtain. Its effectiveness also led to restrictions in many competitions, including some team events.
Those experiences encouraged me to develop a groundbait incorporating dried bloodworm, making this particular ingredient more practical and affordable for anglers to use.
My aim was to capture some of the attraction associated with natural bloodworm in a convenient groundbait suitable for a variety of fishing methods.

How to Prepare Bloodworm Mix
- Start with the dry groundbait: Place the quantity you need in a mixing bowl or groundbait bucket.
- Add water gradually: Introduce small amounts while stirring thoroughly.
- Allow the mix to absorb moisture: Leave it briefly, then adjust the consistency if required.
- Choose your feeding method: Prepare it for feeder fishing, introducing balls of groundbait or topping up an existing swim.
- Experiment with blending: Combine it with another Gold Medal groundbait if you want to add bloodworm-derived ingredients to your usual mixture.
CHAMPION’S TIP: When targeting cautious roach or skimmers, begin with small amounts of groundbait and increase your feeding only when the fish’s response justifies it.
Which Fish Can You Target?
Bloodworm Mix is worth trying for a variety of coarse fish, particularly:
- Roach: A classic species associated with bloodworm fishing.
- Bream and skimmers: Suitable for experimenting with on canals and stillwaters.
