A Different Approach to Hook Bait

Paste fishing has become increasingly popular among coarse anglers, particularly those targeting carp and F1s on commercial fisheries.

Unlike conventional hook baits, fishing paste can be moulded around the hook to create a soft, attractive presentation.

As the paste softens in the water, small particles and soluble ingredients can disperse around the hook bait.

Gold Medal Special Fishmeal Paste was developed from a mixture I used successfully when fishing for carp and F1s.

It’s also an interesting bait to try when targeting bream and other bottom-feeding coarse fish.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with many different fishing baits, always looking for ways to improve the presentation and attraction of the bait on the hook.

As paste fishing became more popular, I began developing my own formulations.

One particular mixture proved successful for me when targeting carp and F1s, and it became the basis of my Gold Medal Special Paste.

The formulation combines high-protein ingredients with halibut and anchovy paste to produce a distinctive fish-based hook bait.

I’ve also found paste to be a useful option when targeting bream.

It’s a bait developed through practical fishing experience rather than simply following a fashionable trend.

Which Fish Can You Target?

Gold Medal Special Paste was developed particularly for:

• Bream: A soft, fish-based hook bait worth trying for bottom-feeding fish.

As with any bait, results depend on the venue, water conditions and how confidently the fish are feeding.

Why Fish with Paste?

Paste offers a different presentation from hard pellets, boilies and other conventional hook baits.

When prepared correctly, it can be moulded around the hook and allowed to soften gradually in the water.

As the outer surface begins to break down, fine particles can disperse close to the hook bait.

This makes paste an interesting option when fish are feeding over a bed of groundbait or other loose feed.

Sometimes changing the hook bait presentation can make all the difference.

How to Use Gold Medal Special Paste

1. Open the container when ready to fish: Take out only the amount of paste required.
2. Prepare a small portion: Roll or mould the paste into a suitable-sized piece.
3. Apply to the hook: Carefully mould the paste around the hook shank and bend, ensuring it is securely attached.
4. Adjust the consistency if necessary: Add a few drops of water to a separate portion if you want a softer presentation.
5. Lower the bait carefully: Avoid unnecessary force when casting or shipping out with the pole.
6. Check the bait regularly: Paste can soften and break down in the water, so replace it when required.

CHAMPION’S TIP: For shy-biting fish, experiment with a slightly softer paste. Add water a few drops at a time to a small portion rather than softening the entire container. The correct consistency should be soft enough to present naturally but firm enough to remain on the hook.

Storage and Handling

Keep the container securely sealed until required and follow any storage or use-by instructions supplied with the product.

Once opened, use the paste as directed and avoid introducing dirty water or used bait into the container.

For the best consistency, take out a small portion for fishing and keep the remaining paste protected from drying out.
